In France, Jogging Is a Running Joke
President’s Exercise Regime Has Critics in a Lather

The sight of the new French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, jogging — often wearing his favorite NYPD T-shirt — has fired up a tempest in a Reebok in France and Britain this summer. Sarkozy’s running is an un-French, right-wing conspiracy, suggests Paris’ left-wing newspaper Libération. In response, British commentators gleefully conclude: The French have lost their minds, again.

On the primary state television channel, France 2, Alain Finkielkraut, a leading French intellectual, recently demanded that Sarkozy give up his "undignified" exercise. Not only did he imply that exposing the boss’s naked knees is something that never would have occurred in the time of Mitterrand, much less Louis XIV, Finkielkraut claimed strolling is the proper activity of the thinking person, from Socrates to the poet Arthur Rimbaud.

"Western civilization, in its best sense, was born with the promenade," said Finkielkraut. "Walking is a sensitive, spiritual act. Jogging is management of the body. The jogger says I am in control. It has nothing to do with meditation."

Sarkozy has fueled a French suspicion that running is for self-centered individualists like Americans, reports Charles Bremner, Paris correspondent for the Times of London.

"Patrick Mignon, a sports sociologist, noted that French intellectuals had always held sport in contempt, while totalitarian regimes cultivated physical fitness," Bremner writes.

"Jogging is of course about performance and individualism, values that are traditionally ascribed to the right," Odile Baudrier, editor of V02 magazine, a sports publication, told Libération.

The British press is having a wonderful time with all this.

"The Sarkozy jog, say his critics, is a sad imitation of the habits of American presidents, and a capitulation to ‘le défi Américain’ (a phrase that was the title of a book published here as ‘The American Challenge’) as bad as the influx of Hollywood movies," writes Boris Johnson, a British member of Parliament and confirmed jogger, in the Telegraph.

"I am not deterred . . . by the accusation that jogging is right-wing," he says. "Of course it is right-wing, in the sense that the facts of life are generally right-wing. The very act of forcing yourself to go for a run, every morning, is a highly conservative business. There is the mental effort needed to overcome your laziness.

"Charles de Gaulle . . . moved with the stately undulation of a giraffe, and never broke into so much as a trot."

Jogging is not a new affectation for Sarkozy. When he was finance minister, visiting Washington for meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, he found it congenial to jog around the Mall, a French Embassy spokeswoman says. Former French ambassador to the United States (and recently named an adviser to Sarkozy) Jean-David Levitte does not indulge, however. Levitte "has a lot of things to do. He is on the run intellectually," she says.

Meanwhile, the readers of British press Web sites are piling on. "No decent conservative would dream of jogging. It’s a vulgar, untraditional form of self-advertisement that might frighten the horses. What’s wrong with croquet?" posted Ian Morrison on the Telegraph Web site. "Had it been a spot of extracurricular horizontal jogging instead, je pense que ze political classe wouldn’t have batted an eye," posted Nixon McVicar.

In the heyday of vaudeville, there was a routine that had one woman complaining about the food at a Catskills resort. "It’s terrible," she says. "Yes," agrees her friend, "and the portions are so small."

Just so, not only is Sarkozy’s running being criticized, so is his style.

Renaud Longuèvre, a noted coach, tells L’Equipe magazine that Sarkozy’s arms hang down, he bends too far forward, his stride is bad and his feet strike the ground incorrectly, Bremner reports. The coach advised the president to get his feet checked, strengthen his abdominal and posterior muscles and to "check your diet because it seems you are carrying a slight excess in weight."

I used to be waaaay overweight and I went through an emotional breakdown so I started not eating at all and just excercising, than i started to black out alot so i started to eat but just a little, just enought to get my body to function and to get me through the day. Then i got tired of workin out every day because my body just didn’t have the fuel to do it and i knew this but i didn’t want to gain any weight. I usually do what people call "Yo-yo" diet because I go from one extreme (eating very little calories) to the other (eating everything in sight) I just can’t seem to find a happy medium. My whole family usually worries about me and encourages me to eat but I’m just so afraid I’ll gain my weight back. I really need some advice on calorie consumption right now. Because I just did it again. For the past 2 weeks or so I’ve only been intaking 1200 calories but today I broke under the pressure once again and I binged. I know by extreme dieting I mess up my metabalism alot. HELP!!!!!!!

I’m 50 pounds overweight and looking for an easy way to get a six-pack for a party in two weeks. I was thinking about taking a Trimspa tablet with my morning bowl of Cap’n Crunch with whole milk; ordering a Diet Coke instead of regular Coke with my afternoon Big Mac Super Value Meal; then after my usual dinner of fried food, salt, cheese, and buttered bread, I’ll have a cup of green tea while I sit on the couch and watch TV all night munching on a family-size bag of Doritos.

I don’t have time to workout and the gym is over ½ mile away, so I was thinking about buying a sauna belt from an infomercial.

How much weight do you think I’ll lose?

Turning 5-10 pounds of fat into muscle?

I have been going to the gym lately, for the past 5 days. I have a good routine down and can already see some small results.
My question is:
how can I burn up the remaining 10 pounds of fat i have as fuel for muscle building?
I’m already taking plenty of WHEY protein, and have a good diet.
thanks.

Trimspa causing joint pain?

I have a cousin who is in terrible pain in her joints. She’s 19, so she’s too young for arthritis, but she says she can barely walk or lift her arms, because her knee and shoulder joints hurt so much. She asked me to look online to see if I could find out if that’s a side affect of Trimspa or not, but I haven’t found anything. Have yall heard of such or a thing, or should I tell her to look into other things she’s been doing?

Shouldn’t it be part of the campaign process rather than hidden under a basket? This is a truly life changing agenda for the whole civilized world signed by Clinton in 1992/93 and yet, thanks to a YA contributor, today is the first I have heard of it. It is meant to stop the use of fossil fuels, change your diet to contain little or no meat, dictate how much water and electricity you can use and no doubt, mandate certain innoculations, as well as dictate where you may live and your mode of transportation.

This is what Obama meant by "hope and change". He is following this agenda to a tee. He is presiding over the US through the UN.
Marcia: I’m not a Republican or a Democrat. I have never heard of this agenda. Have you? Would you have known to look up UN Agenda 21? Did you know when Clinton signed it? NO
You don’t think this is real? Here is the offical site about it.

Cap and Trade is a direct result of this.

Christians: you shall not kill?

I don’t understand how Christians get around consuming animal products and bi-products, I mean we consume so much animal product in the U.S.(and a large % of our population claim to be Christian) it’s sickening, especially when it’s 100% unnecessary and actually harms our own species in addition to the others we share this planet with.

How do Christians get around the commandment you shall not kill(im not sure on this, but i was under the impression it was originally written as thou shalt not kill thy neighbor, in which case I think the animals we share this planet with qualify as our neighbors), and please don’t use the excuse that there are people in third world countries that are starving, because it’s been shown that if we used the resources we have to supply a vegan diet we’d be able to make twice the food that we are capable of making fueling the standard diet, and I highly doubt you happen to be a starving child in africa who has internet access.

You can’t even use the argument against war, as the animals pose no threat to us what so ever, overpopulation? We force them to breed, and most if not all of the animals we eat are peace-loving herbivores.

Anyway, that’s how I look at it, I’m interested in your answers though I suspect the responses will be mostly defensive with no real concern for the animals or the starving children in third world countries or anything but their own supposed salvation.
angel: yup, typical Christian answer, I don’t even think you read my whole question, even if you don’t beleive in animal rights you must beleive in human rights to not starve to death before puberty? BTW I’m an agnostic and a vegan. I don’t think anyone should be consuming animal products, i wont enforce it because that goes against my beleif in true freedom however. I just can’t understand least of all how Christians can consume animal products.
Spike – didn’t read my third paragraph, i covered that, that’s the arguement for war, the animals are helpless and wish us no harm, killing them is murder in my book, and it originally said kill, so, gg puting your faith in the revised version of the bible. All answers so far have been defensive btw with no concern for others, just as i predicted. So far it seems to me that Christianity has dehumanized many.
Animals are not sentient? I don’t know if they are able to be subjective, but they sure as hell can feel. Honestly, all your answers are doing is slowly turning me against religion, seriously, im not even joking, these answers are 100% selfish, it’s disgusting, Christianity just seems like a way to dump your "sins" onto someone else so you don’t have to feel bad anymore, I think over time what has really happened is you’ve learned to ignore your conscience, you all seem dehumanized, lost touch with reality, religion seems more and more like a cult to me with each response. And you all don’t even seem to be capable of comprehending because several of your answers have already been covered, it’s like you’ve lost the ability to think for yourself.
Hannah S – so you’ve been pregnant? I’m not going to go into detail about what happens to cows when they’re pregnant(as they need to keep getting impregnated to keep giving milk) and obviously im sure you know what happens to their children at birth, you of all people should be able to see what im saying.
space monkey – what? our teeth are designed to eat meat? WTF. I didn’t know i had a mouth full of canines, thank you for bringing this to my attention, no, but seriously, have you ever tried to eat a raw animal using just your nails and teeth? We are clearly NOT designed to eat meat, there was a study done which found our digestive system is much closer to a herbivore than it is to an omnivore or carnivore, like dramatically, I dont think there was one characteristic that was closer to an omnivore/carnivore than a herbivore.
space monkey – you truly are ignorant, you really think we wear plastic? most of my clothes are cotton. We’re killing out of self defense huh? When was the last time you saw someone attacked by a wild cow? Did you know that pigs are so similiar to us we can even use their organs for doners? We keep them in cages and force them to breed. We take their young away at birth, we force them to feed a machine until the day we slaughter them as well, self defense? I think not. And for the animals that actually are dangerous? It’s called staying out of their territory and calling animal control, but yes if you were in a life threatening situation I wouldn’t hold it against you if you were to kill an animal in self defense assuming there was no alternative.
Oscar – I have not read the bible, but I get the message, and it seems more likely to me that the bible was written by a person or a group of people that had compassion but not much wisdom at least for today’s standards(he/she/they was probably a genius in his time), he must have known that people were struggling to find an answer and he gave them one, without religion people were probably desperate for answers and jumped at the first explanation, ignoring it’s flaws, that’s what i think is most likely. At any rate, if God is real I don’t view him to be as great as the bible makes him out to be.
sorry i meant i dont beleive he is as great as people make him out to be, judging by the bible he’s a semi-wise tyrant.
space monkey – i beleive it’s possible that once we started eating meat even know we’re not anatomically supposed to the vitamin b12 helped us along the way in evolving into what we are today, before we invented technology scientists beleive we were scavengers and only about 5% of our diet consisted of meat, but I know Christians attitude towards science /smirk.

Personal dilema about biofules?

Anyone else wondering what will happen when these crops (corn, grains etc) become such valuable resources the people who rely on them for staple diets will not be able to afford them…? I know this is happening right now, I am thinking scale it up a few years, decades.

So are we wasting time with plant based fuels right now? Should we be really focused instead on tide/solar/wind as energy sources?

Why cant we just have full electric cars charged by wind or tidal energy?

Does Trimspa work?

Does Trimspa really work for weightloss? My friend swears by it and I want to know if anyone else has ever tried it? Was it successful or a waste of money?
