Christians: you shall not kill?
I don't understand how Christians get around consuming animal products and bi-products, I mean we consume so much animal product in the U.S.(and a large % of our population claim to be Christian) it's sickening, especially when it's 100% unnecessary and actually harms our own species in addition to the others we share this planet with.
How do Christians get around the commandment you shall not kill(im not sure on this, but i was under the impression it was originally written as thou shalt not kill thy neighbor, in which case I think the animals we share this planet with qualify as our neighbors), and please don't use the excuse that there are people in third world countries that are starving, because it's been shown that if we used the resources we have to supply a vegan diet we'd be able to make twice the food that we are capable of making fueling the standard diet, and I highly doubt you happen to be a starving child in africa who has internet access.
You can't even use the argument against war, as the animals pose no threat to us what so ever, overpopulation? We force them to breed, and most if not all of the animals we eat are peace-loving herbivores.
Anyway, that's how I look at it, I'm interested in your answers though I suspect the responses will be mostly defensive with no real concern for the animals or the starving children in third world countries or anything but their own supposed salvation.
angel: yup, typical Christian answer, I don't even think you read my whole question, even if you don't beleive in animal rights you must beleive in human rights to not starve to death before puberty? BTW I'm an agnostic and a vegan. I don't think anyone should be consuming animal products, i wont enforce it because that goes against my beleif in true freedom however. I just can't understand least of all how Christians can consume animal products.
Spike - didn't read my third paragraph, i covered that, that's the arguement for war, the animals are helpless and wish us no harm, killing them is murder in my book, and it originally said kill, so, gg puting your faith in the revised version of the bible. All answers so far have been defensive btw with no concern for others, just as i predicted. So far it seems to me that Christianity has dehumanized many.
Animals are not sentient? I don't know if they are able to be subjective, but they sure as hell can feel. Honestly, all your answers are doing is slowly turning me against religion, seriously, im not even joking, these answers are 100% selfish, it's disgusting, Christianity just seems like a way to dump your "sins" onto someone else so you don't have to feel bad anymore, I think over time what has really happened is you've learned to ignore your conscience, you all seem dehumanized, lost touch with reality, religion seems more and more like a cult to me with each response. And you all don't even seem to be capable of comprehending because several of your answers have already been covered, it's like you've lost the ability to think for yourself.
Hannah S - so you've been pregnant? I'm not going to go into detail about what happens to cows when they're pregnant(as they need to keep getting impregnated to keep giving milk) and obviously im sure you know what happens to their children at birth, you of all people should be able to see what im saying.
space monkey - what? our teeth are designed to eat meat? WTF. I didn't know i had a mouth full of canines, thank you for bringing this to my attention, no, but seriously, have you ever tried to eat a raw animal using just your nails and teeth? We are clearly NOT designed to eat meat, there was a study done which found our digestive system is much closer to a herbivore than it is to an omnivore or carnivore, like dramatically, I dont think there was one characteristic that was closer to an omnivore/carnivore than a herbivore.
space monkey - you truly are ignorant, you really think we wear plastic? most of my clothes are cotton. We're killing out of self defense huh? When was the last time you saw someone attacked by a wild cow? Did you know that pigs are so similiar to us we can even use their organs for doners? We keep them in cages and force them to breed. We take their young away at birth, we force them to feed a machine until the day we slaughter them as well, self defense? I think not. And for the animals that actually are dangerous? It's called staying out of their territory and calling animal control, but yes if you were in a life threatening situation I wouldn't hold it against you if you were to kill an animal in self defense assuming there was no alternative.
Oscar - I have not read the bible, but I get the message, and it seems more likely to me that the bible was written by a person or a group of people that had compassion but not much wisdom at least for today's standards(he/she/they was probably a genius in his time), he must have known that people were struggling to find an answer and he gave them one, without religion people were probably desperate for answers and jumped at the first explanation, ignoring it's flaws, that's what i think is most likely. At any rate, if God is real I don't view him to be as great as the bible makes him out to be.
sorry i meant i dont beleive he is as great as people make him out to be, judging by the bible he's a semi-wise tyrant.
space monkey - i beleive it's possible that once we started eating meat even know we're not anatomically supposed to the vitamin b12 helped us along the way in evolving into what we are today, before we invented technology scientists beleive we were scavengers and only about 5% of our diet consisted of meat, but I know Christians attitude towards science /smirk.

Christians are under the laws of the NT, which doesn’t include the 10 Commandments.
In any case, even Jesus ate fish.
So only Christians eat meat? God gave us these animals to sustain our lives.
Its "thou shall not commit murder"
Eating meat is not a sin.
The word kill – Hebrew: ratsach
1) to murder, slay, kill
a) (Qal) to murder, slay
1) premeditated
2) accidental
3) as avenger
4) slayer (intentional) (participle)
b) (Niphal) to be slain
c) (Piel)
1) to murder, assassinate
2) murderer, assassin (participle)(subst)
d) (Pual) to be killed
God said "Kill" not Murder, which means taking of human life. If they read the creation story, the food is plainly stated. Not even the animals were to eat flesh……
Yes but it also said that we get to rule over all the animals
BRB
Genesis 1:26
"Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, [a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
eating meat is not a sin meat is not murder ok besides god gave us these animals to eat or befriend life cats n dogs and we eat cattle.
man is an omnivore eating both meat and vegatables–animals are not our neighbors–if you believe the religious tripe–the commandment says (best translation) thou shalt not commit first degree murder not in time of war (doesn’t apply to animals)–also–if again you believe the tripe–man was given dominion over plant and animal to do with as he wished. Herbivores are not peace lovers idiot–you have to be sentient to be peaceful. Herbiovores are not sentient. If you wish to be a vegan go ahead I don’t care but please don’t come here with fallacious arguments that are epic fail on both the atheist and theist side. Are you one of those morons that compared the poultry industry to the holocaust?
Get off the redneck juice, man.
It is the Human life that is the grand. Human life cannot be taken, it is too much for you to comprehend what human life really is and what it’s really about. Maybe that is why we are self aware…except for you, of course. Some get the unfortunate handicap at birth…being an animal is one of them.
Christians do not live by the 10 commandments. We live by the teachings of Christ. Christian means Christ-like. So did Jesus eat meat? Well, we know he ate fish.
I understand your compassion for the animals, as I myself tried to go vegan a few months ago. It didn’t work for me, but I don’t believe that what we eat makes us more spiritual.
Also,God told Noah that he gave us all living things to eat, along with the green herbs.
ur gonna get a lot of crap for this, there’s no where in the bible that it says we shouldn’t eat animals. In the old testament they were killed and eaten and even offered for sacrifices all the time, and in the new testament God actually sent down anmals for someone to eat (even though it turned out to be a dream lol. In christianity there’s nothing wrong with killing animals for meat, find some other means of trying to force ur vegan ideals on others….
As for the starving children in the world, most of the blame could go to thier own goverments, Nigeria is seen as a underdeveloped country but with the oil it produces its the third richest country in Africa, its just that the corruption there is so steep that they’ve been holding themselves back.
It’s not that we don’t care about the children(at mleast most of us) its just that its not our fault and there’s not much we can do about it.
Ah, he’s male. That explains everything. I’d love to see you get pregnant or have a period and NOT eat red meat. If god didn’t want us to do it, he wouldn’t make women crave it and need it to replenish the iron that he designed our bodies to lose.
You’re from PETA aren’t you.
you kidding?
those so called christinas are the ones that supported bush to invade iraq and love anotehr war now with Iran,
they love israel no matter what she does in gaza or west bank,
thou shall not kill belongs to the past
Animals are a renewable resource. What would you rather wear- leather or something made from plastic- which DOES pollute?
We are omnivores, we are meant to eat everything- look at our teeth! Look at our nature- we are hunters.
Our digestive system is set up to eat meat and certain plants, too.
Thou shalt not kill pertains to killing other humans out of evil. When we are faced with kill or be killed- God allowed it- that isn’t murder- it’s self-defense.
It was God himself that killed the first animal to clothe Adam and Eve. It was also God that required animals to be sacrificed in the Temple for sin offerings. It was God that told the Hebrew slaves in Egypt to kill a lamb and spread its blood on their door posts during the Passover. It was God that provided the ram to be sacrificed by Abraham in place of Issac.
Hope this answers your self-serving and arrogant question.
I find it amazing how many people try and put the rights of animals on the same level as human beings. Tells volumes about their misplaced value system.
This is a very good point. If Christianity inspires such love in peoples hearts, why is it not extended into the animal kingdom, rather then for just your own species. Really it is an extended form of racism. Something does not look like you, thus it is okay to do what you will with it. People say we are omnivores, look at our teeth. Well we don’t go around biting other people folks, and we do have fangs.
This was always a big turn off for me in Christianity. The lack of caring for any other kind of animal then the human one. WE are so exalted over all the other species. The great hairless apes. I hope that there is reincarnation so that the less compassionate of you Bible thumpers experience the horrors of a slaughter house some day. What people really need is a major dose of empathy.
Shouldn’t people be free to eat what they want? You cannot force a vegan lifestyle upon someone who does not want it. Just like you cannot be forced to believe in a religion you do not want to.
Animals cannot be placed on the same level as humans.
But I do believe that people should not eat more then they have to when it comes to animals. The places that they are raised are not always the healthiest and they often have short and unhappy lives, this should be fixed. However, plants are alive are they not? Just because their life is different then that of an animal or human does not mean that they are not alive. Is growing large numbers of crops that different then having a herd or flock of animals? Both are being used to sustain human life.
Which would be economically easier for people in poorer countries to do: cultivate crops or have animals of some sort? Whichever is more beneficial is what should be done to help those without food.
I love animals who are not dangerous to my well being. People make dangerous animals. As to kill them in self defense is a whole other subject, i guess. I once heard it say; that big fish eat little fish. We do live in a imperfect world and it’s sad how some people can take eating meat to the extreme. As far as the third world children. We don’t even have to go to the third world to see starvation. I live in L.A. and there is allot of hungry people here.
I once saw a movie that these hikers were stranded on top of a deep snowy mountain. I believe it was a plane crash. Anyway, my point is they ate dead humans as a survivor need. So, that is what i think.
oh by the way its…..Thou shall not commit murder.
not all land is suitable for crop production the land that is suitable is already used as crops are by far the most profitable [or is currently forest[yes you vegies are responsible for de forestation so rather than kill the animal you just destroy its habitat]] animals such as sheep however can be raised anywhere if we are to sustain ever growing cities without completely destroying the world we need to use every square foot of land to its best potential [i m not a christian but i can never resist a pop at a townee vegee] are you one of these vegees that eats fish? can i add i consider all animals equal these people who think humans are something special are idiots i cosider all life equal including plants
I’m not religious but I was wondering. Are you actually going to read the Bible or just continue to make it up as you go along. Because even I know better than this BS.
First of all, it’s really bad to tell your readers what they can and can not argue in their answer to your question. That’s not how this works. Also, stick to your original question and don’t use this forum as a venting place for your anti-Christian polemic.
Let’s move on. The Commandment "you shall not kill" (or even "you shall not kill your neighbour" – though i have no idea what source you’re using to claim that as the original inscription) pertains to people, not animals. Human beings are the only creature created in the image of God (take a moment and think about what a huge deal that is – we bear the image of our Divine Creator and Father). The reason why it is such a big deal to kill someone is because you are defacing the image of God, and robbing them of the "breath of life" and spirit which God placed in them.
Animals, however precious to God as part of His creation, do not bear the divine image. This, however, is not an excuse to kill animals at will. Death, ultimately, is a bad thing in God’s eyes (though it may be used to bring about some good, or even some greater good). So, death of any kind is not best. However, we, because of original sin, live in a world where death has become a normal function of life, and is unstoppable by our own hands.
When sin came into the world, so did death. And when Adam and Eve fell, after first covering themselves in fig leaves, God himself killed animals and gave them their skins to wear.
Now, harm to animals is not good either. God himself commands people to be good stewards of His creation, which also means to take care of the animals. To farm, shepherd, etc. But killing animals is ok, as humans need animal meat to have the best functioning diet. I know you believe there are organic alternatives, but forsaking meat posses a lot of health problems in people.
So, "you shall not kill" doesn’t include animals. God wants us to take care of His animals, but also knows that We need them to survive. Unnecessary harm to them is not alright, but we do not become better people from sparing animals’ lives.
Also, have you even observed animals? They fight, they hunt, they kill, they dominate, they war, and if humans interfere in that, they turn on us too. They are not our enemies, no, but don’t go off on any fanciful nonsense about them all being "peace-loving." Even geese, who mate for life and remain monogamous (seemingly virtuous, no?) put up fierce displays o power and anger, and will peck at you and beat you with their wings, and fight each other for their initial mate, and for their nesting grounds.
And, good sir, if you are such a good evolutionist, why would you ever object to eating other animals? That is the basis of evolutionary survival – the strong overpower the weak, and species hunt and kill to survive.
