Where can i get race fuel to put in my Harley?
I have a 2002 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 with cycle-shack slip-ons, and last year took it to the drag strip one day with some friends, and found the joy that is the "blue race fuel", which not only smells really nice, but also seemed to give my bike some real extra torque. I believe i filled up with an octane between 105 and 110 (and laughed at the kid putting 130 into his mom's civic). For how fuel efficient my bike is, i think this year i would like to just buy a drum of race fuel to keep on hand, to run my bike on most of the time.
Is it safe to feed my harley a diet of 110 octane blue race fuel? Is this fuel legal for public road use? Where can i get a drum of the fuel? I live in northern iowa, area code 50613. How long would it stay good, if i just filled 5-gallon jugs at the drag strip to keep in my garage?
What about AvGas? It's low-lead, and i have access to it (father has airplane) but i hear it melts valves on cars. Anyone used it for a prolonged time?
Oh and for those who are curious, my best run in the quarter was 13.6 seconds at 98mph. I had put on a different handlebar, that pulled the cables too tight, only letting my clutch engage 95% so instead of wheelies (which it eagerly will do), i could feel the clutch slip significantly. So i think i could have done 13.0 easily, after i had the shop reset my clutch cable settings internally (it was past the limit of what could be adjusted at the handlebar).
Actually i have plenty of r/c nitro fuel laying around, and it is not anything i would trust putting into anything of value. We put a tank of r/c nitro into a GoPed when we were in high school, and boy that thing ran like a raped ape, but after that it never really, um, ran quite right, ever again. I would be afraid of all the extra oil in the fuel gunking up the engine (the stuff is only 25% nitromethane, the rest is basically castor oil).
It runs like it's on choke when i use 89 ethanol (only when i'm on reserve and nowhere near a decent station) so usually i put 91-93 premium in there. The time i put race fuel in, the thing ran really great it seemed, and also smelled really nice. I think the longer burning perhaps gives more torque at lower rpm's, although i could be speaking out my butt here. If i could get a drum of 110 to know i'd be using it, i'd get the bike re-timed and re-jetted to that specific fuel. Thinner head gaskets for raised compression might be good too (or what would you advice for engine mods to use this fuel? maybe 00 limit on parts/labor)

H+H or VP are two that I can think of if you do not have a speed shop around try the NHRA web site or the companys web sites to find a dealer. Sounds like you ran some old H+H
blue. I do not know what it cost now last time I bought some it was 8 a gallon. I think it was VP and more Octane my Kawasaki ran real nice on about 112 or 115. By the way do not try that old red neck thing about Avation Gas bad for your motor and doesnt do anything for it.
Call your nearest hobby shop( yellar pages) and ask'em if they sell nitro fuel for RC cars. This stuff is about $30 a gallon & we mix 1 cup : 1 gal. of gas.
Is your engine set up to need that high octane fuel??
If not it is a waste of money and its all in your head if your sporty is stock you are slowing the burn rate down -Hurting it not helping And No slip ons dont make it no race tuned engine
Prolonged use yeah it will crud up your engine because it wont burn clean enough also buy plugs by the case it will foul them right & left
Build your engine first then think about the fuel
You could buy octane booster at your local automotive store. I don't know what state you live in, in Michigan you can buy turbo blue which is what your asking for, at allot of the gas stations, you can also try some drag racing magazines they usually advertise those products.
many motorcycle dealers sell race fuel for motocross bikes, it comes in a blue 5 gallon can and the last i checked its $55.
long question, but I would also agree if your engine is not set up for it then it is a waste of money.
Check the local Citgo or Sunoco gas stations. Look for one that sells Turbo Blue racing fuel.
This fuel is good for up to 14 to 1 compression. Also works with turbochargers or superchargers.
Turbo Blue contains lead and is for off road use only.
I wouldn't recommend it for every day use. Very expensive. I don't think a street engine would last very long using it. Serious racers frequently rebuild their engines so it is not an issue for them.
Turbo Blue is what most of the local racers use where I live.
Unless you have made some serious modifications to your engine, high octane racing fuel will be a big waste of your money.
The octane rating is the fuel's resistance to spontaneous combustion under compression. The higher the octane rating, the more compression it takes to make the fuel spontaneously combust.
A high compression engine requires higher octane fuel to prevent detonation. Detonation is a condition where the fuel air mixture ignites while being compressed before the spark plug fires. Detonation can cause serious internal damage to an engine.
So higher octane fuel will only do you any good if you have some serious modifications to you engine such as high compression pistons giving a compression ratio of 12 to 1 or better, a turbocharger, or a supercharger.
See the link below for a better understanding of gasoline. The 4th page of the article explains octane.
It's all in your head. First of all, a higher octane does not boost performance. That is a myth. All it does is prevent knock. The reason why performance vehicles use a higher octane level is because they have higher compression ratios, which will cause predetonation if you don't use higher octane fuel.
Second of all, you sound like an idiot. That Sportster engine is not made for a lead-based fuel or ethanol. You are going to end up frying some rings (if you are lucky) or doing more damage to that motor. If you want to destroy the motor on a $8k machine, go right ahead. Otherwise, there are plenty of people who would be happy to have that bike that won't treat it like it's a toy.
EDIT: Looks like someone beat me to my rant. But it's "predetonation", not "detonation". Your fuel is supposed to detonate, just not prematurely.
you'd need a minimum 12:1 compression before you require that kind of octane (over 91), the rest is all in your head.
(you can't build an evo sporty with a higher ratio than 12:1, they just don't offer any combinations even with dome pistons with valve cutouts that mathematically add up any higher, and if yours is built up to 12:1, it ain't no street bike)
if you're insistent in doing something different because it makes you feel better about it, why don't you try out an ethanol, methanol, or nitro methane fuel…. that'll shake any of the loose parts out
Buy a rice rocket.
WHY … its not a sport bike, and running a quarter mile on a harley will get smoked by any other brand of motorcycle. your waisting your money and potentially damaging your engine.
